This pitiful-looking little fellow lives in Ganeshpuri, in India. My mama took this photo when she was there recently.

Many Indian street dogs have a terrible life. They struggle to find enough food to eat. They are not vaccinated. Many suffer mange and other treatable or preventable diseases. They are not desexed and wander the streets fighting with other dogs. Many have infected wounds from fighting.

Life on the physical plane in India is tough. The condition of the dogs is a constant reminder of this. Mama says I should be thankful I was born in Australia. I am!

My mama has just come back from another trip to India. She told me about this sweet little street dog that she fed each day. She said he would meet her near Umesh’s chai stall in Chapel Street, and she would buy him some biscuits. He was very gentle, and didn’t snatch the biscuits from her hand like some hungry dogs do.

He has part of his right ear missing (street dogs tend to get into lots of fights because they aren’t desexed), but I think he’s still cute.

Udaipur is known for its lake, home to the opulent Taj hotel that sits in the middle of it. The hotel was the location for the Bond movie Octopussy, and all around the town are signs advertising this presumably a way of establishing credibility with the Western tourists who visit.

My mum says Udaipur is one of her favourite places in India even
though she’s not a Bond movie fan. The dogs certainly look like they love it!

Tipu doesn’t let his cough get him down. He gets on with his life – checking out new visitors, running out the front gate to see what’s going on in town, and making sure he doesn’t miss out on Yogini’s great food (he’s almost on the podgy side – quite unusual for an Indian dog). And when he needs a bit of a rest, he has a good lie down.

Sounds like a pretty good approach to life, don’t you think?
